การใช้ If clause มี 4 แบบ
แบบที่ 1 If + Present Simple, Present Simple
วิธีใช้ ใช้กับเหคุการณ์ที่เป็นความจริง
เช่น
• If you heat water, it boils. (ถ้าคุณต้มน้ำ น้ำก็เดือด)
• If you get here before seven, we can catch the early train. (ถ้าคุณมาถึงที่นี่ก่อน 7 โมง เราก็สามารถขึ้นรถไฟไปได้เร็ว)
• I can’t drink alcohol if I have to drive. (ฉันไม่สามารถดื่มแอลกอฮอล์ถ้าฉันต้องขับรถ)

แบบที่ 2 If + Present Simple, Will + V1
วิธีใช้ ใช้กับเหคุการณ์ที่เป็นเหตุเป็นผลซึ่งกันและกัน
เช่น
• If I have enough money, I will go to Japan. (ถ้าฉันมีเงิน ฉันจะไปญี่ปุ่น)
• If he is late, we will have to the meeting without him. (ถ้าเขามาสาย เราจะต้องเริ่มการประชุมโดยไม่มีเขา)
• I won’t go outside if the weather is cold. (ฉันจะไม่ออกไปข้างนอกถ้าอากาศมันเย็น)
• If I have time, I will help you. (ถ้าฉันมีเวลา ฉันจะช่วยคุณ)
• If you eat too much, you will get fat (ถ้าคุณกินมากเกินไป คุณก็จะอ้วน)

แบบที่ 3 If + Past Simple, would + V1 (would แปลว่า น่าจะ) (Past Simple à V2)
วิธีใช้ ใช้กับเหคุการณ์ที่ตรงข้ามความจริงในปัจจุบัน หรือ อนาคต
เช่น
• If I knew her name, I would tell you. (ถ้าฉันรู้ชื่อเธอ ฉันก็น่าจะบอกคุณ) [จริงๆ แล้วไม่รู้จักชื่อเธอ]
• She would be safer if she had a car. (เธอน่าจะปลอดภัยกว่านี้ ถ้าเธอมีรถ) [จริงๆ แล้วเธอไม่มีรถ]
• It would be nice if you helped me do the housework. [มันน่าจะดีถ้าคุณได้ช่วยฉันทำงานบ้านบ้าง] [จริงๆ แล้วเธอไม่ช่วยเลย]

แบบที่ 4 If + Past perfect, would have + V3 (Past perfect -> Had + V3)
วิธีใช้ ใช้กับเหคุการณ์ที่ตรงข้ามความจริงในอดีต
เช่น
• If you had worked harder, you would have passed your exam. (ถ้าคุณขยันให้มากกว่านี้ คุณก็น่าจะสอบผ่าน) [จริงๆ แล้วสอบตกไปแล้ว]
• If you had asked me, I would have told you. (ถ้าคุณถามฉัน ฉันก็น่าจะบอกคุณไปแล้ว) [จริงๆ แล้วคุณไม่ได้ถาม]

If + Past perfect, S + would + have + V3

ใช้กับเหตุการณ์สมมุติที่ตรงข้ามกับความเป็นจริงในอดีต ความเป็นจริงในอดีต : You didn't go to the party last night. You didn't meet your girlfriend. สิ่งสมมุติ : If you had gone to the party last night , you would have met your girlfriend. ( = Had you gone to the party last night, you would have met your girlfriend.) (การละรูป if) ความเป็นจริงในอดีต : I didn't pass the exam last semester. I didn't study hard. สิ่งสมมุติ : I would have passed the exam last smester if I had studied hard. (= Had I studied hard , I would have passed the exam last semester.) ความเป็นจริงในอดีต : My wife was so angry with me. I forgot that yesterday was her birthday. สิ่งสมมุติ : My wife wouldn't have been so angry with me if I hadn't forgotten that yesterday was her birthday. (=Had I not forgotten that yesterday was my wife's birthday, she wouldn't have been so angry with me.) ความเป็นจริงในอดีต : I had an accident last year. I drove the car very fast. สิ่งสมมุติ : I wouldn't have had an accident last year if I hadn't driven the car very fast. (= Had I not driven the car so fast, I wouldn't have had an accident last year.) If + past perfect, S + would + V1 หมายเหตุ การสมมุติเหตุการณ์อาจเป็นการผสมผสานกันของเหตุการณ์ในอดีตและปัจจุบันก็ได้ ซึ่งเราจะเรียกว่าเป็นแบบผสม (Mixed Type) กล่าวคือ การสมมุติเหตุการณ์ที่ตรงกันข้ามกับความจริงในอดีต ใช้ Type threeและการสมมุติเหตุการณ์ที่ตรงข้ามกับความเป็นจริงในปัจจุบันใช้ Type Two สังเกตุโครงสร้างแบบนี้ นั่นคือ ประโยค if-clause เป็นเหตุการณ์สมมติในอดีต และ main clause เป็นเหตุการณ์สมมุติในปัจจุบัน ตัวอย่าง Mixed Type - If I had checked the oil in my car carefully yesterday , I wouldn't be in trouble now. (ถ้าฉันตรวจดูน้ำมันในรถอย่างรอบคอบเมื่อวานนี้ ฉันคงจะไม่ตกอยู่ในความลำบากขณะนี้ ) (นั่นคือ ความเป็นจริงในอดีตคือ I didn't check the oil in my car yesterday และความจริงในปัจจุบันคือ I am in trouble now.) - If I hadn't gone to bed so late last night, I wouldn't be tired today.. (ถ้าฉันไม่ได้เข้านอนดึกมากเมื่อคืนนี้ วันนี้ฉันก็คงจะไม่เหนื่อยแบบนี้) (นั่นคือ ความเป็นจริงในอดีต คือ I went to bed so late last night. ความจริงในปัจจุบันคือ I am tired today.) - If it had rained so much last year, my crops would be better now. (ถ้าฝนตกมากเมื่อปีที่แล้ว ตอนนี้พืชผลของฉันคงจะดีกว่านี้) (นั่นคือ ความเป็นจริงในอดีตคือ It didn't rain so much. ความจริงในปัจจุบัน คือ my crops are not good now.)
